Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
Botanic Garden
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden, covering 33 hectares, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere. Established during the French colonial period in 1736, it was significantly developed by Pierre Poivre, who introduced exotic plants like nutmeg and cloves. After facing difficulties under British rule, the garden was revitalized by James Duncan in 1849, expanding its palm collection. Renamed in 1988 to honor the first Prime Minister, it is now managed by a Trust focused on conservation, education, and history.
